Kitchen Remodel

I decided to have the kitchen remodeled, shortly after we moved in. I thought...it will be perfect. I won't unload the kitchen boxes until they are done. And while we were busy unloading all the other boxes in the house, they could work on the kitchen.

It was only supposed to take 5 days. Remember 5 days. Here is our journey....

Before we moved in the kitchen looked like this:

Day 1- The painters are still finishing up another job, but the owner has some carpet people come to prep the cabinets and tape things off. So the painters can get things started tomorrow. However, carpet guys are not painters and they get frustrated with how long it takes and leave after an hour.

Day 2- No one shows up. I finally get a hold of the painters and they were still finishing up the last job and the carpet guys didn't want to come again. So no work was done today. But they are going to work Saturday and they will still be done this week. Lina and Ruthie make holes in the plastic wall separating the kitchen from the rest of the house.

Day 3- Painters show up at 11:30am, they got pulled over on the way for expired plates and their vehichle gets impounded. They start taping and masking off the cabinets, they work until 3, when their ride came to get them. Promises that they will still be done on Sat.

Day 4- More taping... we are almost halfway done with taping.

Day 5- More taping... Funny thing Painters new van won't start and now has to be plugged into our house all day so it will start when they want to go home.

Day 6- More taping...Taping finished...sanding starts...today is Saturday...They are supposed to be done today, but no painting has happened yet. Didn't help that the power went out during another snow storm. New finish date is Tuesday.

Day 7- Day of Rest

Day 8- Priming is supposed to happen today, so we are gone for the whole day. However we return to promisies that priming will happen tomorrow. More sanding done.

Day 9- Priming happens. Projects new completion date is in two more days.

Day 10- Sanding after priming.

Day 11- First and second coats of paint on outer cabinets. White.

Day 12- Third and fourth coats of paint on outer cabinets. White

Day 13- First and Second coats on island. Black.

Day 14- Day of Rest. Furnace Stops working, because paint got into the furnance. TIP from Heating Company: Never paint with your furnace on, even if it is just a little painting and even if it is that night, after the paint has dried for a couple of hours. We killed our furnance, they are coming in a few days to install a new one.

Day 15- Fifth coat of paint on outer cabinets. White. New finish date tomorrow.

Day 16- Glazing Starts

Day 17- More Glazing and clean up. New finish date tomorrow.

Day 18- More Glazing and clean up. New finish date tomorrow.

Day 19- Final Cleanup. We are done. And we have put the counter replacement on hold as we build up our courage for more remodeling.

I will post the final picture of the kitchen, soon once the furniture comes. And maybe if you are lucky you will see the new countertops, if I get brave.

It turned out beautiful, but what a headache! Looks like you have a really beautiful new home. I'll have to come see it in person someday!

Alison it looks beautiful. I love the white much better than the blond wood. Good choice. I can't imagine having workers in my house constantly for 20 days. How have you been feeling?

I like the black island with the white cabinets. It all looks great! Mason and I had a laugh at the impounded van.
